The award, which is determined by a board that includes Mr. Martin and musicians like Earl Scruggs, Pete Wernick, Tony Trischka and Béla Fleck, will be given in its inaugural year to Noam Pikelny, the banjo player for the bluegrass band Punch Brothers. Mr. Pikelny will receive a bronze sculpture created by the artist Eric Fischl, and his band will perform with Mr. Martin on “Late Show With David Letterman” on Nov. 4.
